I reviewed this depraved novel for The Guardian. Snip:
Perhaps turning so hallowed a site of human suffering into pulp fiction will scare admirers off. It is an approach more common in movies: treating weighty subjects such as nazism and slavery through the medium of schlock is, after all, exactly what Quentin Tarantino does. Like Tarantino, Tidhar may find that some people don't take him seriously. But the joke's on them. Seriousness is the least of it: A Man Lies Dreaming is a twisted masterpiece.

If anyone from the Guardian is reading, they might take note that I have not read your review because I no longer click on Guardian links (unless I have time to read them in full right away, which is very seldom), because they take over the CPU and speaker with bizarre animations that can't be turned off.
ReplyDeleteThat's good to know, Bianca.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sure they don't care that I personally didn't click on your review. (Actually, your review was the last one I did click on, and closed it when staticky music started playing.) It's good for you, really, because I leave your pages open in tabs for longer. But seriously, I've gone from "oh goody, an article in the Guardian, I bet that will be interesting!" to "that links to the Guardian, too bad."
ReplyDeleteYour reviews in other venues stay up in tabs until I actually have the time to read them properly, though.
